PROJECT 3- Outdoor Deck Development

OUTDOOR GARDEN DECK SPACE DEVELOPMENT.

As noted i previous posts, the outdoor rooftop deck spaces have become key areas of the design. These decks are public outdoor spaces that will provide an interesting and unique experience for the user.

The development of the two deck spaces is shown below.

FIRST FLOOR- GALLERY DECK:

The first floor deck is adjacent and connected to the gallery. This space is seen as a public outdoor space, and possible a space where public art can be exhibited.

Layout development
As shown above, the deck space will flow over 2 levels, with a 0.5 meter difference between them. A variety of planters will be integrated into the decking and seating will be created by the planter structures. The space will not be a green roof as such, more a deck with pot plant like vegetation integrated into it.

The paths are wide and there is the potential to reduce the number of planters and leave these raised platforms empty, and as podiums that can display public art.

Rough representation of the deck space.
The sketch above indicates a potential layout. The level changes are evident as is the integration of seating.
SECOND FLOOR- CAFE DECK:

The second floor deck is a more critical space and the design needs to reflect this. The deck is located next to the cafe space and will serve as an outdoor seating option for customers.

Sketch plan

The plan indicates the creation of the cafe space and the indoor seating. The cafe will be a simply designed arrangement of counter tops, those with an exterior surface will use folding doors to provide a level of security and allow the space to be closed when not in use. The image also shows the addition of a large indoor seating area, that is enclosed by a curtain wall, similar to that used in the gallery space. This will allow light into the space and views out. It will also help to create a spacious and open space. A change of levels creates a physical edge between the deck and the deck garden spaces. This level change of about 1 meter is used as a secondary seating option, where a bar like counter top and stools have been arranged. These will be semi protected by the roof of the indoor area and will boast excellent views of the city.

The garden space also makes use of level changes. This makes it easier to incorporate planters into the deck and create versatile seating options. The norther portion of the deck will employ a shading device. Ideally this will be made from timber and provide a semi shaded space and an ideal sub tropical space.

Level changes, seating options and planters are clearly indicated in the plan above.
